Grace, played by Jane Fonda
“Grace owned a cosmetics company, so she had a practical knowledge of beauty and was always neat,” explains the beauty artist David De Leon. According to the pro, the big difference this season was that he embraced her gray hair. “I adjusted the makeup tones to harmonize with her new hair color, aiming for slightly lighter and cooler base tones for the lips, cheeks and eyes,” he said. To highlight Jane Fonda’s look, he mainly invested in the smoky gray shade with a warm peach eyeshadow “to bring out the blue of your eyes”. A heavy layer of mascara and false lashes have been added to “make the eyes shine”.
As for the rest of the face, the cheeks received peach-pink undertones, while the lips were highlighted with a matte pink lipstick, usually Color Riche in Fairest Nude, by L’Oreal. On occasions when the character was more disguised, his mouth was colored with stronger colors: “I also applied a bright pink or red lipstick”.
During Season 7, you can see Grace let her grizzled roots grow long to reveal a sleek silver bob, mirroring Fonda’s off-screen hair transformation. In the first four episodes released in 2021, hairstylist Jonathan Hanousek wore three wigs to show the progression of the protagonist growing into her natural gray, which Fonda revealed at the 2020 Oscars.
“Grace was tired of keeping stereotypes about beauty,” explains Hanousek. “In real life, Jane was also ready to grow her natural hair color.” During the final episodes, Fonda sports her gray hair. “Grace is more relaxed and her hair is softer, not combed like in previous seasons,” she says. “Overall, I think her style is sophisticated and modern.” For De Leon, it is the epitome of a timeless look. “I love the fact that, even though Grace has a classic and conservative style of dressing, she has always looked gorgeous with her silver locks and glamorous makeup.”
Frankie, played by Lily Tomlin
“Frankie is a mix of hippie, bold, eccentric and free-spirited,” says the beauty artist Refuge girl. “His makeup had to reflect naturalness while enhancing his adorable features.” Unlike Grace’s dresses, Frankie’s productions are bolder and more lively. “I love Frankie’s style,” says De Haven. “His wardrobe was quite colorful, so it was important that his makeup was strong enough to balance her hairstyles and his looks, but still reflect softness.”
To prepare Lily’s skin, the professional didn’t give up on primer to create the perfect foundation that smoothes wrinkles, reduces shine and helps set products. “Shooting days can be long and are the perfect prep for cosmetics to last longer,” says De Haven, who handled skin coverage as needed with light layers and a little pink on her cheeks and lips. Playing with Tomlin’s clear eyes was also key. “They are a beautiful blue color and a special shape,” she says. “It was important to emphasize them without changing it.”
Another essential part of capturing Tomlin’s hippie spirit was with his spiked hair and long silver waves, which are actually a tribute to the creator of Grace and Frankie, Marta Kauffman. “We took inspiration from Marta’s beautiful long dark locks with silver streaks and used her vibe as inspiration for Frankie,” she explains. hairdresser Marlene Williams on creating the wig worn by Tomlin, adding that the lace was blended with different natural shades “to represent the natural aging process of the hair”.
To texturize the waves, the idea was to create a natural look for the waves: “Frankie’s wig was brushed with a hair dryer, the curls were created with a curling iron and then released for a natural wavy look”, Williams explained, adding that she used a light hair oil to smooth stretch marks and add definition. Regardless of the style of the episode, Tomlin’s carefree and inspiring beauty was always in full force.
