Aracati stimulates economic recovery with event tourism

With almost 50 km of coastline that includes dunes, cliffs, open beach and bays, Aracati, located 150 km from Fortaleza, has established itself as a sun and sea tourism, attracting tourists from all over the world to see its beauties. However, since 2017, the municipality has distinguished itself by organizing major events, favoring the economic development of the region.

“Event tourism is a driving force in the economy, moving it since the spread of the city, passing through the hotel park, restaurants, rented houses, supermarkets, pharmacies, bakeries, gas stations, almost the entire production chain,” says Joseni. Soares de Souza, Secretary of Tourism and Culture of Aracati. “Here is the great importance of events, they increase the collection of taxes and, consequently, revenues,” he added.

This month, the city is preparing to host important events and save the power of post-pandemic tourism, with three programs involving sports, gastronomy, entertainment and religious festivities.

On Friday, the 15th, at 4 pm, the traditional representation of the Passion of Christ will take place in Quixaba district. The installation has been around for more than 20 years and has the participation of fishing families and local artisans who make all the stage props. “People experience the show as part of the imagery, watching scene by scene. And the apotheosis is in the Arena da Paixão, with the beautiful view of the beach and the white rocks “, says the secretary.

On April 16 and 17, Saturday and Sunday evenings, the municipality will host concerts by Bell Marques and Zé Vaqueiro, respectively. The parties will take place on Avenida do Ginásio, in the Cacimba do Povo district, at the entrance to Aracati. The event will take place in a fenced place with a 3-dose vaccine passport fee. “Everything is done together with the security agencies, such as the Fire Brigade and the Military Police, which follow the entire planning of the event”, the manager reinforces. And on the 20th, Léo Santana’s show takes place at Canoa Quebrada.

To close the month of April, Praia de Canoa Quebrada will host the 2022 University of Brazil Beach Games. From April 28 to May 4, more than 1,200 athletes from across Brazil will participate in the tournament.

The events sector is recovering

With the pandemic, the events sector was one of the hardest hit in the economy, with 97% of companies in the sector adversely affected, according to the Brazilian Association of Event Promoters (Abrape). Aracati, which has around 92 hotels and inns and 196 restaurants, bars and the like, has felt losses along the production chain.

“The restrictive measures have canceled all events of all sizes, involving thousands of workers in the area, leaving a huge loss for everyone. In addition, the entire chain of independent professionals such as street vendors, snacks, coconut water, various drinks, popsicle vendors, buggies, quads, tour guides, etc. [foi afetada]”, Points out the secretary.

The flexibility of Covid-19 prevention protocols has given the sector a new spirit to work on the economic recovery of Aracati. “For every real investment in event tourism, R $ 13 is returned to the economy, according to a study by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation in 2019. Aracati and its people recognize the importance of the sector very well. The city’s economy, with 40,000 inhabitants at the headquarters alone, is heating up for months after the events “, observes the manager.

Programs such as Carnival, Gastronomic Festival, São João and Virada Cultural put Aracati on the national calendar of events, which proved to be great opportunities for economic development for the region. Of these, Carnival is one of the largest in the state, with an audience of 450,000 people per night, according to a 2019 survey conducted by the Vale do Jaguaribe Institute.

“Events are a driving force, even among those who do not go to the event itself, but visit the city, come with friends and enjoy all the beaches of Aracati during the day. Others come with families, because only children participate in the events and then we consolidate the destination for all ages, with infrastructure that will easily serve all audiences “, underlines Joseni Soares de Souza.
