Are you going to the Algarve? A Ver Tavira ou o Céu, 7 must-see restaurants – Restaurants

Last weekend, it was one of those guys: the one who put a towel in a bag and went to the beach, or the one who stayed at home, browsing social media for various photos of those who had already made their first dive. Summer is over a month away, but the weather is conducive to swimming and a favorite destination for many Portuguese: the Algarve. If you are thinking of going there, we have some tips on how to enjoy your time by the sea.

One of them has a date and will take place next Saturday, May 14, at the award-winning restaurant A Ver Tavira. Chef Luis Brito will be joined by six more people to serve “Algarve à Mesa”, exemplified by pink tomato crab and prince’s tea.

In addition to this event and the new tasting menus – both at Aurora and CaféZique, both in Loulé – there is a very famous restaurant that is best booked now, even if you only go in June: Noélia e Jerónimo, in Cabanas de Tavira, to find out more than the toast the chef takes to Rock in Rio Lisboa.

7 tips, 7 moments (unfortunately read-only, no tasting) that will make your mouth water, at least until the weekend when thermometers in the Algarve can reach 28ºC, according to the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA ).

Mark your calendars: next Saturday, May 14th, it’s time to sit down at the A Ver Tavira restaurant in Tavira and enjoy not only the small town on the Algarve coast, but also “Algarve a Mesa” as the initiative is called. Chefs Alipio Branco, João Diaz and José López have joined newly-starred Luis Brit, who received his first Michelin star at the end of 2021 for A Ver Tavira.

And in the stellar restaurant, the tasting menu of 13 Algarve highlights for the occasion couldn’t be less. Enjoy acorda sardines, pink tomato crab and princely tea, cherry chicken with parsley; feijoada littão in Olhão style, surprises in the dessert and harmony in the glass (selection from Quinta João Clara and Morgado do Quintão will be made by sommelier Claudia Abrantes).

Dinner at A Ver Tavira starting at 19:00 costs 130 euros per person. You can book via email (restauranteavertavira@gmail.com).

In April, a new way of eating fish appeared in Faro. It’s called Escama, a restaurant name that “was born from the need to elevate traditional Algarve cuisine at its strongest element, fish,” the space says on Instagram. And there is no shortage of fish diversity: real croaker, needle, cuttlefish, horse mackerel or rudd. Some of them are less familiar, so it’s time to bet on new flavors.

You can order it grilled or more original with tiborn mackerel or cuttlefish à Bulhão Pato. For appetizers, you can also find oysters, shellfish and shrimp from the coast, which go straight to the restaurant hall, where everything is in Portuguese: fish, music and wine.

Praia São Rafael in Albufeira is back for another hot season with fresh cocktails on the table. In addition, there are new items from Chef Dumitru Gheorghe on the menu with Portuguese, regional and maritime flair – there is never a shortage of fish and seafood here.

It’s right in the appetizers, which, if you’re excited, ends with an appetizer before moving on to the main ones. These are breaded cuttlefish strips, Bolhão Pato clams, fried shrimp, squid and tomato-based octopus. But come with us and make room for the next: lobster tail risotto and steak on the stone are new additions, along with the already-famous monkfish skewers, shrimp and bacon.

As an accompaniment, you can stay true to the famous passion fruit sangria or try the updated cocktail menu.

About the new-shaped donut with mackerel tartar with chorizo, avocado, muxama and popcorn (8.80 euros), we would say that Christmas has arrived at the Aurora restaurant in Lola, but other news does not deceive: summer is just around the corner, but in hot weather, you want fresh seafood. But not only. For the new menu, chef Vitor Veloso took some land, the Algarve coast and the Ria Formosa.

The result, in addition to filhos, can be tasted in tender clam pastry with leeks and miso, cilantro and mayonnaise with chili-lime (3.50 euros apiece), as well as cuttlefish and prawns from the coast with poached egg and bacon. Crispy (10 €) – both for starters. This is followed by king croaker with stewed leeks and stewed sauce with pork feet and rice broth (€17.80) or vegetarian fried carrots with fermented cauliflower, dried egg yolk and San Jorge cheese flakes (€7.50) . Finally, the chef offers a dark beer mousse with candied pear and cakes (€6) paired with a late harvest from Quinta da Alorna (€5.50).

If you want to be surprised, choose the new tasting menu option with six highlights (59 euros per person and 24 euros with wine).

It might have been in the clouds, but Sky Visser, 23, a chef, and Jenny Sally, 25, a department head, decided to go further and take customers to heaven, whose doors are open February 2nd.

What are you eating here? Unlike the previous ones, and for a change while walking through the Algarve, here you will find a mixture of South America and Asia, even if the oysters in the appetizers are deceptive. Instead of the natural ones that have become fashionable, in Seu they are grilled and seasoned with Thai sauce (3.50 euros). There is also a vegetarian curry with freshly baked naan bread (15 €), grilled octopus marinated in rooibos served with lime cream and carrot and ginger puree (21 €) and Tornedo in carrot puree with celery root (24 €).

For dessert, ask to go to Céu with Ceu Jardim (€10).

CaféZique in Loulé opened in January 2020 and is run by Chef Leandro Araujo. At the opening, MAGG talked about a nine-moment tasting menu that included a moment of brioche with “wine from the Sintra region, with a salty mineral intensity accompanying that of the brioche.” he said, “the chef, but now there are new offerings on the tasting menu.

In addition to another dish to round out the ten moments, the new menu includes new flavors including spider fish, sumac and lime. It’s only the third and towards the middle, in the 5th moment, cuttlefish, potatoes, rose and sriracha are introduced before a new moment of bread: buttermilk bread. At the end, the chef introduces corn, orange, almonds and orange blossoms.

The menu is 80 euros per person and the pair is 48 euros.

This is a classic in the Algarve, more precisely in Cabanas de Tavira. And why are we included in the list? Not only because it’s one of the must-see places when you travel to the country’s south coast, but also because Noelia Jeronimo’s talents are put to the test at Rock in Rio Lisboa 2022.

Since the festival will only be a sample – in particular, toast – of what Noelia has to offer, it is necessary to know everything else in the restaurant with the very name of the 2021 chef. At Cabanas de Tavira, they serve the flavors of their “dear Algarve2” such as cuttlefish caviar pil-pil, garden prawns, goat rice and even cheese sweets with D. Rodrigo.

It is impossible to resist what Noélia serves, nor the simplicity and relaxing effect of Cabanas de Tavira.
