From 13 to 15 May, in the Porto Marinho area of ​​the municipality of Cantagalo in Rio de Janeiro, dwarf rice harvest festival. The purpose of the event is not only to celebrate the production of grains typical of this region on the banks of the river Paraiba do Sul, but also to popularize this variety of cereals, still little known even in neighboring communities. To this end, in partnership with the municipal government of Cantagalo, Senac RJ has prepared a program of seminars and shows on the importance of this rice to the local cuisine and its potential for gastronomy. A tourism promotion will also be organized in partnership with Sesc RJ. The event also marks the release of Editora Senac Rio’s book “With great pleasure, Arroz Anã”.

“At the Harvest Festival, we will present to the Cantagalo region, Porto Marinho and visitors the result of the work developed by a group of people and institutions in weekly meetings held virtually during the pandemic, and later product tests in the Senac RJ Kitchen Research and Innovation. The dwarf rice evaluation activity in Porto Marinho aims to promote and promote the use of this food in neighboring communities and, above all, to recognize the importance and encourage the sustainability of its production in this remote village of Rio de Janeiro. This is a rich and unique food, carefully grown for decades by family farmers in Porto Marinho without the use of pesticides, that deserves to be known and appreciated,” says Senac Brazilian Chef RJ and Founder. from the Maniwa Institute, Teresa Corçao.

The Arroz Anã project at Senac RJ is coordinated by Chef Oswaldo Gorski. Senac RJ’s Harvest Festival program begins on Friday at 1:05 pm in Kantagalo with a workshop for diners from schools in the region. The goal is to introduce cooks to a product that could soon be adopted on the public school menu. Participants will learn how to use dwarf rice in savory recipes, sweets and even snacks.

On Saturday, May 14, a party, free and open to the public, takes place in Porto Marinho, in a tent set up by the City Hall. At 2:00 pm, Chef Teresa Corçao hosts a show class to present the versatility of cereal in the preparation of savory and sweet dishes. Participants will learn how to make dwarf rice salad and manjar rice with guava syrup. Shortly thereafter, at 15:30, there will be a cultural and folklore presentation of Mineiro Pau, and from 17:00, a Meu Xodó forro show with artist André Bussinger. The presentation is sponsored by companies and civil society associations from Cantagalo.

Chef Carol De Knop, who already uses dwarf rice on the menu at her Quintal Restobar in Santo António de Padua, will offer an exclusive recipe – dwarf rice with grilled vegetables and aioli – at Venda Antiga in Porto Marinho.

On this day, Sesc Nova Friburgo Social Tourism also organized a visit to Porto Marinho with a program dedicated to dwarf rice. The group will leave Nova Friburgo at 8:30 am and at 10:30 am will be welcomed by the Association of Producers with a presentation on local history. Lunch at 12:00 will also feature cereal as a highlight of the menu. After that, visitors participate in Harvest Festival programs.

On Sunday, May 15, the Harvest Festival returns to Cantagalo where Teresa Corção gives a new show class at 10:00 am in the Fraterno Auxílio Cristão (FAC) auditorium. Participants will be able to learn how to cook beetroot risotto and Indian sweet rice. The program is free and public.

Both Porto Marinho and Cantagalo will host the book launch of “Great Pleasure, Arroz Ana” by Editora Senac Rio, hosted by Chef Teresa Corção. The publication presents the results of a year-long study of dwarf rice from Porto Marinho by Grupo e Pesquisa e Inovação na Cozinha do Senac RJ. The book contains additional information about the origin and characteristics of this cereal, the cultivation process and the importance of this product to the local culture. In addition, it records the traditional recipes of the inhabitants of Porto Marinho and presents innovative proposals for the use of cereals in sweet and savory dishes. There are classic options such as the Arroz Doce de Porto Marinho, as well as novelties such as jollof rice, beetroot risotto, and vegan milk made from a local variety of rice.

Dwarf rice from Porto Marinho
Recognized for its unique taste, it comes from family farming and is grown by the coastal community without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. The grain is similar in shape to Japanese rice, but has slightly smaller grains. Thanks to a different cooking technique and its own texture, aroma and taste, it is highly valued by the local population and visitors.

Anã rice has gained importance as a strong element of identity and the basis of local cuisine, and is currently a candidate for a Geographical Indication (GI), an instrument that values ​​the manufacturing traditions of a select group of products associated with certain territories. . The project from Cebrae Rio is supported by Senac RJ, which aims to promote the popularization of the Porto Marinho region, mainly in terms of gastronomy and tourism. The goal is to contribute to the development of the local community through income generation, vocational training and tourist attraction.
