Electric and hybrid cars, the new trend in the second-hand market

In recent years, hybrid and electric cars have started to appear on the roads. More economical and less polluting, these new engines have many advantages. However, the high prices of these new vehicles can sometimes prevent buyers from purchasing. Therefore, opting for a used vehicle can be very beneficial!

Choosing between a hybrid, electric or thermal vehicle is often a dilemma. According to a recent study conducted by Harris Interactive*, of the 57% of French people who want to change their vehicles more or less in the long term, 41% plan to switch to a hybrid vehicle and 16% prefer an electric vehicle. It is a logical choice when we observe the increase in fuel prices in recent years. Because even if hybrid and electric models cost more, profitability is important in the long run. With an electric car, it costs an average of 2 to 3 € more per 100 km traveled. Conversely, traveling 100 km in a thermal vehicle will cost around €12. In addition, the maintenance cost of an electric vehicle is lower than a thermal model. The state offers many advantages (conversion bonus, ecological bonus, etc.) to compensate for the high price of hybrid and electric cars.

Another positive point is the ecological aspect of these two models. If the absolutely ecological impact is less with electricity during the use of the vehicle, the “end of life” part of the batteries and their recycling is still controversial with the public and neutralizes the ecological interests of electricity.

What are the differences between an electric vehicle and a hybrid vehicle?

Economical, ecological, powerful and quiet, hybrid and electric cars share many advantages. However, there are some differences that you should be aware of to ensure the best choice for your needs.

electric car

An electric model, by definition, runs on electricity only. This has a positive impact on the environment as there are no CO2 emissions on the go. Another advantage of acquiring an electric vehicle lies in its maintenance. Beyond the tires, there are almost no wearing parts to replace. Equipped with much fewer parts in the engine part than other vehicle types, this model can travel thousands of kilometers without a hitch (no air or oil filters that need to be maintained and replaced…). Finally, choosing electricity means opting for silence. No more engine or exhaust noise. Calmness reigns in the cabin.

This type of product still has two drawbacks. The first is autonomy. Indeed, if you are looking for a vehicle that will travel long distances, this will sometimes be a problem for you. On average, a full charge will allow you to travel about 300 km. Therefore, if your journey exceeds this distance, you will have to wait for the charging time.

The other disadvantage concerns the purchase price of such a tool. The new will usually cost between €20,000 and €90,000 depending on the model to hope for more autonomy. It’s obviously not a budget fit for every budget. Fortunately, you now have the opportunity to get a second-hand model from a professional. For example, the multi-brand Spoticar label offers around 1,200 used electric cars. Lower cost vehicles with up to 24 months warranty, subject to more than 100 rigorous checks. A good compromise to combine savings and ecology!

hybrid vehicle

The hybrid car combines a heat engine (petrol or diesel) and an electric motor. In the city, we save an average of 40% on gasoline because we drive mainly with an electric motor. Thus, in traffic jams, parking lots, 30 zone etc. The vehicle does not consume fuel. Above 50 km/h, the conventional engine is activated. The advantage of this type of vehicle is therefore to benefit from a reduction in fuel consumption without being blocked by its autonomy. With a hybrid vehicle, you can charge the battery in two ways: while driving or with a conventional charging system.

If you are used to driving in an urban environment, the hybrid engine will adapt to suit your driving. If you live in the countryside and drive on major roads, the hybrid engine will receive little attention and therefore not or will be less profitable. Again, the purchase price of a hybrid vehicle is relatively high. But the good news is that Stellantis’ used vehicle label, Spoticar, is offering more than 200 hybrid vehicles, 2,400 plug-in hybrids, or about 4,000 hybrid and electric models, in May 2022. checkpoints and warranties, as with electric vehicles.
