A the beauty of Iguaçu Falls, in Foz do Iguaçu (West), one of the seven wonders of nature, will be the scene for the opening of the Sertões International Rally, the largest rally in the world on timed sections. Governor Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior followed this Wednesday (May 25th) the launch of the competition in the State, which hosts for the first time in history the start, scheduled for August 26th.
Through the Superintendence General for Sports, the State Government is a partner in the event, which is included in the calendar of Adventure and Nature Games Paraná. On the route from Paraná, in addition to leaving Foz do Iguaçu, it will also pass through Umuarama, in the northwest, then to Presidente Prudente (SP).
“Brazil has more than 5,000 cities struggling to bring an event like this, which is very important in the global car calendar and attracts the press around the world. It is very important for us to have this opportunity, because one of our objectives is to promote the tourist attractions in Paraná “, said Ratinho Junior.
“We are coming out of the pandemic after two years. Foz do Iguaçu has a strong recovery in the sector, which is the great vocation of the city. In addition, it passes through Umuarama, showing the beauties of the North-West “, he said.
The governor also highlighted the infrastructure investments in Foz, which are preparing the city to host major events and the large volume of tourists. “We have managed to get the extension of the airport runway out of the paper, which has become one of the largest in the south of the country, the second bridge with Paraguay, and now we are going to double the Cataratas Highway,” he said.
THE LARGEST IN HISTORY
The 2022 edition, which honors the Bicentennial of Brazil’s Independence, will also be the largest in the history of the Sertões International Rally. Sertões traditionally lasts eight days, but the 30th anniversary edition will take almost twice as many days for competitors to cross the country.
In 15 days, they will cover 7,216 kilometers, of which 4,811 kilometers are special sections, passing through eight states in the five Brazilian regions. Arrival is scheduled for September 10 at Salinópolis (PA).
Registration is still open, and the organization expects about 300 cyclists to take part in Sertões’ four modes: cars, motorcycles, quad bikes and UTV. They will pass through the cities of Paraná, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Tocantins, Piauí, Maranhão and Pará.
In addition, the forecast is to gather up to 3,000 people, including the technical team, and to increase from R $ 800 thousand to R $ 1 million per day in the participating cities. “In 2022, Sertões is no longer the largest rally in America and is becoming the largest rally in the world. And one of the objectives is to show Brazil and to promote its beauties internationally “, said the CEO of the competition, Joaquim Monteiro.
“Sertões arrived in Foz do Iguaçu in 2015, so there is nothing more honorable than doing this special edition in 2022, on the occasion of the Bicentennial of Independence and on our 30th anniversary, in a place as grand as the Waterfall.” underlined Monteiro. “It will be an epic edition, to challenge the cars and human beings that will cross the country, passing through the five regions to show a Brazil that few Brazilians know.”
With the longest run in three decades of competition, Dunas Race, the rally organizer, created two separate events for those who could not complete the entire route: Sertões Sul and Sertões Norte. The first, from August 26 to September 3, with a prologue and seven stages and ends in Palmas. The capital Tocantins is the place where the second route begins, also with seven stages.
The Superintendent General of Sport, Hélio Wirbinski, emphasized that sporting events are great drivers of tourism. “We bring here 3,000 people, 300 competitors, complete hotels and promote the economy of Foz do Iguaçu and Umuarama. That’s how we do sports in Paraná, bringing big events to our cities, ”he said.
In addition to the car competition, the Sertões International Rally serves as a showcase for the promotion of Brazilian tourism. Under this proposal, the Iguaçu Falls are one of the four “treasures” of this edition, along with the Jalapão region in Tocantins, Viana Canyon in Piauí, and Bananal Island, also in Tocantins.
This is the second time that Foz do Iguaçu has been included in the competition itinerary. In 2015, the race landed on the Brazilian side of the Itaipu power plant. In the words of the organizers, Foz will offer the caravan unique and attractive images that make it one of the most sought after tourist destinations around the world. Iguaçu Falls is impressive for its beauty and volume of water, which has turned the set of 275 waterfalls into a natural heritage site.
The city located 640 kilometers from Curitiba still hosts the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, the largest on the planet in terms of power generation. Being the starting point of the challenge, the competitors and the teams will have the chance to know everything up close, even with the haste of the preparations.
The mayor of Foz do Iguaçu, Chico Brasileiro, stressed that it will be an important moment for the resumption of post-pandemic tourism. “This event is a great achievement for Paraná and the cities it will visit. Leaving Foz is another attraction we will have in August, both for the dissemination of our destination internationally and in the movement of the economy, “he said.
