Richard Mille – Bubba Watson Tourbillon RM 38-02 – Style and Trend

Golf is an ideal testbed for our watches because it requires great physical strength. A watch on the wrist of an excellent striker like Bubba Watson must be able to withstand the pressures of sudden stops and accelerations. However, these elements taken into account in the design of the RM 38-02 are not limited to these!

“I’ve been pushing Richard to buy a pink watch for ten years and here it is! said Bubba Watson after discovering the RM 38-02.

Inspired by the boldness and “lucky” color of previous Bubba Watson calibers, the RM 38-02 is built around a base plate in Carbon TPT®, a material composed of multiple parallel carbon filaments. This material, which is ubiquitous on the RM 38-02, is very demanding in machining, not only because of its hardness but also because of its skeletal workmanship. Like the finished watch, the base plate has undergone numerous extensive tests to ensure that it does not affect its mechanical properties in any way.

The plate supports class 5 titanium bridges that provide strong dynamism to the mechanism. These hold the helical tooth profile wheels and the tourbillon equipped with a variable inertia balance wheel. The timer bridge includes two bars that cross the action on both sides. Crafted in grade 5 titanium and optionally hand-painted, pink accentuates the overall lines of the caliber. Another nod to pink is also revealed in the reworking of the motif found on the driver’s head, which Bubba used in competition behind the caliber on a monumental micro-perforated bridge. The installation of these PVD machined bridges does not allow the watchmaker to make the slightest mistake. A clumsy move, a scratch on the part, and the component should be replaced immediately. Ultimate rigor for ultimate performance.

The evolution of golf has drastically changed the discipline over the years, both in terms of players’ physical abilities and techniques. New riding modes allow golfers to push the ball further. The application of new construction processes and the discovery of new materials have enabled club manufacturing at the cutting edge of technology. A golf ball should be able to withstand accelerations of up to 50,000 g: no less was needed to guarantee the RM 38-02’s shock resistance of up to 10,000 g. The volumes of the caliber, which is only 9.19 mm thick, are staggering. Engineers paid particular attention to dimensions, on the one hand, to strongly affirm the architecture that expresses its complexity, and on the other hand, the compactness necessary to resist shocks.

Pink? promise kept! To best reflect Bubba’s unique personality, the new RM 38-02 Tourbillon Bubba Watson fulfills this need inside and out. Its case is made from a unique blend of Pink Quartz TPT®, White Quartz TPT® and Carbon TPT®, which beautifully reflects Bubba’s eccentric and unique personality. Combining these different colors and materials so subtly was a real technical challenge. But that was Bubba’s wish from day one of partnership. That wish has now been fulfilled with this asymmetrical case that stretches between 2 and 5 o’clock and eliminates friction on the wrist caused by the dynamometric crown. The carbon TPT® and pink Quartz TPT® center section offer a stunning contrast of style that characterizes this colorful watch, while the skeletonized bezel offers great visual power and emphasizes the sporty side of the watch. The RM 38-02 Tourbillon Bubba Watson is the fourth tourbillon watch in the collection, named after the famous athlete, thus celebrating over ten years of existence in the Mille family. Limited to 50 pieces, it represents roughly the hourly equivalent of one hole at a time.

Pink

Pink is a color that has fascinated Bubba since childhood. Originally expressing his youthful desire to stand out from the rest, it eventually became his hallmark by adorning his bats, balls, signature driver and clothes. Bubba uses this iconic pink to accompany her other dreams, a way to bring more visibility to the causes she supports with her charitable commitments.

Center case in Carbon TPT® and pink Quartz TPT®

Protecting the base plate with Carbon TPT®, the RM 38-02’s casing band is made of the same material here combined with Pink Quartz TPT® fibers. Combining these different colors and materials so subtly was a real technical challenge. To complete this piece, the indentations in the middle visually widen the openings on the bezel.

asymmetric case

The silica layers with a maximum thickness of 45 microns are impregnated with a pink resin developed especially for Richard Mille. They are then interleaved by an automated laying system that changes the direction of the fibers by 45° between layers of white and pink silica. The asymmetrical shape of the case prevents the dynamometric crown from rubbing against the wrist, providing optimum comfort.

Carbon TPT® frame

The processing of this skeletonized plate is an engineering marvel. A key component of the RM 38-02, it has passed a series of rigorous tests to verify its mechanical properties, such as shock resistance up to 10,000 g for the tourbillon caliber.

Grade 5 titanium bridges

The base plate supports bridges made of titanium, treated with grade 5 PVD, which gives the movement strong dynamism. The timer bridge includes two bars that cross the action on both sides. They also visually emphasize the impression of power imparted by the caliber, such as the monumental micro-perforated bridge made of grade 5 titanium and hand-painted, repeating the motif found on Bubba’s driver’s head.
